Giedrius, is the event registered in Latvian autosport federation, so that competition licence holders could participate ? And how you define "street legal" tyres ? E or DOT marking ? Hoosiers ok ?

Hi,
We are now in the dialog with Latvian Federation, but it's only concern Latvian sport license holders. For foreign (no matter if they have any sport license or not) and latvish participants without LAF license there is no influence.
Street Legal tyres: E or DOT, or both. Tyres on which written "For competition use only" or similar writings is not allowed to use. Hoosier is only racing tyre so it's not allowed. |

I was just wondering how you interpretate rules ? Hoosiers (and other similar) have DOT, so they are technically street legal, but infact they are close to slicks. |

Answering for Peep: go to https://www.hoosiertire.com/rrtire.htm, scroll to the end of the page and you will find SPORTS CAR D.O.T. - RADIAL (A6 & R6) tires that are built specifically to take advantage of rather lax U.S. rules for DOT certification, so in theory they are street legal. The tread pattern looks like this:
Is the traffic shown in the S2000 on-board Bikernieki video typical for your events or is it from some other trackday? It seemed that the (good) driver could only get one clean lap out of four, with time in the 1.37.xx range.

I have passed this question for our technical person, who knows better and makes the decisions.
Regarding video: it was Honda Club track day. In our event we make groups depending on the tempo of the drivers to avoid such situation.
Regarding LAF: we're in procedures with LAF. They require to do at least two chicanes, for safety. I believe it will be so. |

Anyhow it's not allowed in our event. We will change the Regulations with more specific details: "Tyres should have ECE Standart 30 marking (mark “E” with country of homologation code, for example: E4; E2 and etc." All tyres should correspond to two things altogether: 1) street legal, and 2) not slick of any type. |

Would be easier to say that "cheater slicks" are not allowed. Many tyres do not have E marking, while being honest street tyres or semi slicks.
Cheapest way to go fast is used racing slicks, so it's another question, if they should be not allowed ? Your current regs force to buy R888's or similar, making competitive participation more expensive in most cases. Sure, it just my opinion, but it's based on what we have seen here during 8 years of running the trackdays. In the end it's light cars on used slicks, which are most economical way to go fast and have fun - and then they don't need zillion hp & big brakes to do that.
If you would like to run one event next year on Pärnu track, then let me know, I can provide any assistance needed. Our track is well suitable for streetcars, as it has plenty of runoff area in most corners, so cars can be driven to the limit with bigger confidence. |

On a trackday, yes - but not if there is an official competition like Fast Lap, as having a set of brand-new slicks AND wets will give a large advantage, which some competitors surely take, forcing others to either also come up with the cash or simply be uncompetitive. In the end, you end up with two extra sets of tyres and wheels that cannot be used on the street. (Compare this with just one set of trackday tyres, which many fast car owners run on the street anyway.)

One can buy also GT3...or GT-R...considering diffcult times in economy. |

Cheater slicks - correct. That's best describe of that.

I don't know about Estonia, but we have for example Toyo 888 205/50/15 here cost 70 euro. So they are quite affordable and more suitable for casual use than slicks. But mainly the reason is not in this. The problem is that slicks are hard to get warm up and while it's not warmed up it's very slippery. For amateur drivers it's too dangerous.
Also if you use slicks (especially used) - one hard lock on the brakes and you can throw that slick away.
devilc also posted some arguments.

I have been in Parnu and it's in our plans. Maybe not for this year, but in 2010 for sure. What your EASU says about "time attack" event in Parnu track? Do they allow street cars to compete? In Lithuania there is no problem, but in Latvia we will be obligated to use chicanes to slow down the average speed.

LAF (Latvias autosport federation) decides that, not us. We would prefer without chicanes :] Preliminary we have talked about two chichanes: a) before "the bridge", b) start/finish line - before that very fast first right turn. In this week all be set and we will know exactly. |

Shikaanid on jama jah, need võivad minu tiptronicule saatuslikuks saada --- ilma nendeta see rada sobib automaadile hästi, pikad pidurdusmaad, kastil on aega käike vahetada.

Yellow squares are chichanes and start/finish lane line is modified a bit. I wish it was more to standart configuaration, but that's the "fastest" configuration LAF has approved - safety first. |

I think that the start-finish straight becomes very interesting after this modification, the driver will have to set up the car for the chicane entry while maintaining maximum speed through the last corner, which in turn needs some planning before the penultimate corner. Very challenging, should separate the men from the boys

Start-finish line looks interesting indeed, let's see how it looks in real life. Should still Giedrius, how fast are the chicanes? Stop and go type or more like 80 km/h? |

I don´t think that the modified start-finish line is something too technical or strange. As the chicane is very slow then there is not too much to lose in there if you of course do not overdrive your skills/car´s ability Or let´s say this way that there is not much to win, but a lot to lose in that chicane if you crach.
